The Lions Campus Approach

Co-Occurring Disorders

At Lions Campus, we recognise that many young people face more than one challenge at the same time. When emotional wellbeing difficulties occur alongside challenges such as substance use, trauma, or behavioural difficulties, these are often referred to as co-occurring disorders.

Our Co-Occurring Disorders Support Programme is designed to support young people through a coordinated, compassionate, and whole-person approach. We believe that meaningful progress happens when every part of a young person’s experience is understood, supported, and guided together.

What Are Co-Occurring Disorders?

Co-occurring disorders, often referred to as dual diagnosis, describe the presence of two or more conditions at the same time—most commonly a mental health disorder alongside substance use, trauma, or another behavioural challenge. For young people, this may mean anxiety combined with alcohol use, depression alongside self-harm, or ADHD with cannabis misuse.

When these difficulties overlap, they often affect one another. One challenge can intensify the other, creating a cycle that feels overwhelming for both the young person and their family. Without the right support, focusing on only one issue may leave other important struggles unaddressed.

At Lions Campus, we take a whole-person approach that supports all areas of a young person’s wellbeing together — helping them build balance, resilience, confidence, and healthier coping strategies.

Signs of Co-Occurring Disorders

The signs of co-occurring disorders can vary widely, as each individual’s experience is unique. In young people, these signs often overlap, making it difficult to recognise where one condition ends and another begins. Some of the most common indicators include:

  • Emotional and Behavioural Signs

    • Persistent feelings of sadness, worry, or irritability.
    • Sudden changes in mood or behaviour.
    • Withdrawal from friends, family, or social activities.
    • Difficulty managing anger or frustration.
    • Engaging in risky or impulsive behaviours.
  • Academic and Daily Functioning Signs

    • Declining performance at school or frequent absences.
    • Difficulty concentrating or completing tasks.
    • Struggles with organisation and time management.
    • Loss of interest in hobbies or activities once enjoyed.
  • Substance Use and Coping Patterns

    • Using alcohol, drugs, or other substances to manage emotions.
    • Increasing tolerance or reliance on substances.
    • Behavioural changes linked to substance use, such as secrecy or isolation.
  • Physical and Health-Related Signs

    • Changes in sleep patterns (too little or too much).
    • Fluctuations in appetite or weight.
    • Decline in personal hygiene or self-care.
    • Frequent complaints of headaches, stomach aches, or other unexplained physical symptoms.

Recognising these signs early is important. When multiple challenges occur together, they can make daily life more difficult to manage. Early support can help young people build resilience, improve emotional wellbeing, and develop healthier coping strategies over time.

How We Support Co-Occurring Disorders

Our Support for co-occurring disorders is designed around the belief that healing must be practical, compassionate, and personalised. We begin with a careful consultation to better understand a young person’s experiences, emotional wellbeing, daily routines, and the challenges they may be facing.

Our focus is on helping young people manage overlapping challenges in healthier ways. By combining emotional support, skill development, mentoring, and wellbeing-focused activities, we help young people strengthen confidence, improve emotional awareness, and build healthier routines for everyday life.

Our Approach

Integrated, Whole-Person Support

At Lions Campus, we believe co-occurring disorders should never be viewed in isolation. When multiple challenges exist together, they can affect emotional wellbeing, relationships, confidence, education, and daily life. Meaningful progress comes from supporting all of these areas together.

Our approach is built around integration, consistency, and personalised guidance. We support young people through programmes that combine emotional support, wellbeing practices, mentoring, structured routines, and family involvement where appropriate. Key elements of our approach include:

  • Personalised Consultations to understand the full scope of each young person’s challenges and strengths.
  • Holistic Interventions including mindfulness and physical activity to strengthen wellbeing from the inside out.

Our goal is not simply to reduce difficulties, but to help young people strengthen confidence, emotional resilience, self-awareness, and long-term wellbeing.

Tailored Programmes as Unique as Your Needs

We know that co-occurring disorders affect every young person differently. Some may experience anxiety alongside substance-related challenges, while others may struggle with low mood, emotional regulation, or behavioural difficulties. Because every experience is unique, our programmes are designed to provide personalised and flexible support.

Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all model, we provide carefully structured options that allow each young person to receive the right level of care at the right time. These include:

  •       Residential Programme for Adolescents: An immersive environment where young people can step away from daily pressures and receive round-the-clock support, focusing on stability, healing, and growth.
  •       Day Programme for Adolescents: A flexible daytime programme combining wellbeing activities, mentoring, and structured routines while maintaining connection with home and education.
  •       Coaching & Mentorship: Personalised one-to-one guidance focused on resilience, confidence-building, emotional awareness, and healthier coping strategies.

Every programme is built on the principles of privacy, compassion, and personalisation. By supporting all aspects of wellbeing together, we help young people strengthen resilience, build confidence, and move forward with greater stability and self-belief.

Frequently Asked Questions about Co-Occurring Disorders

  • Why do co-occurring disorders happen together?

There is no single cause. Genetics, brain chemistry, trauma, stress, and environmental factors can all contribute to the development of two or more conditions at once.

  • What are the early signs of co-occurring disorders?

Warning signs include mood swings, withdrawal from family or friends, declining school performance, risky behaviours, and increased reliance on substances to cope.

  • How are co-occurring disorders supported at Lions Campus?

We use a personalised and integrated approach that may include mentoring, wellbeing strategies, emotional support, and structured routines tailored to each young person’s needs.

  • Why is it important to treat both conditions together?

When only one challenge is addressed, the other may continue to affect wellbeing and progress. Supporting all difficulties together encourages healthier long-term outcomes.

  • Will support remain confidential and private?

Yes. Privacy and confidentiality are central to our approach, helping young people and families feel safe and supported throughout the process.
