What is Substance Use Disorder?
Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a condition where alcohol or drug use becomes hard to control, even when it starts causing harm. While experimenting with substances can be part of adolescence, reliance on them as a primary coping mechanism, frequent use, or disruption to daily life can signal a disorder requiring professional help.
The causes of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) are often complex. On the surface, a young person may be coping with academic pressure, poor sleep, or peer influence. Beneath that, unresolved trauma, family difficulties, negative self-perceptions, or unhelpful thought patterns can contribute. Biological factors like genetics, hormonal changes, and brain chemistry also play a role.
At Lions Campus, we focus on both the symptoms and underlying causes. Through structured support and wellbeing-focused approaches, we help young people regain balance safely and sustainably. Our Substance Use Programmes include mindfulness, skill-building, and holistic support—addressing different aspects of substance use.
Clinically, SUD shows up as intense cravings, inability to control use, and continuation despite negative consequences. It may also bring restlessness, trouble focusing, sleep issues, and physical symptoms like headaches or nausea. Over time, school, friendships, and family life can suffer as the person hides their use and avoids dealing with it.
