The Lions Campus Approach

Depression

Watching your child struggle with depression can be heartbreaking. At Lions Campus, we understand how deeply it can affect school, friendships, and family life — and how overwhelming it feels as a parent to know where to turn. That’s why our depression support programme is designed to do more than manage symptoms. We help young people rebuild confidence, strengthen resilience, and discover lasting wellbeing.

With the right guidance and support, your child can regain control, restore balance, and look toward the future with hope. At Lions Campus, our mission is to walk alongside families, empowering adolescents and young adults not just to grow, but to thrive at school, in relationships, and in life ahead.

What is Depression?

Depression is one of the most common yet most misunderstood conditions affecting young people. While occasional sadness is a normal part of life, depression lasts longer and can disrupt mood, energy, relationships, and daily functioning.

Depression can be influenced by many factors, including stress, lifestyle, emotional experiences, poor sleep, social pressures, or ongoing emotional difficulties.

At Lions Campus, we support young people through structured programmes, wellbeing-focused approaches, and positive routines that help restore balance and confidence over time.

Clinically, depression is defined as a mood disorder that negatively affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. It is characterised by persistent sadness, loss of interest or pleasure, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and changes in sleep or appetite. For young people, depression can lead to academic difficulties, social withdrawal, and feelings of hopelessness that impact every area of life.

Types of Depression

Depression can take many forms, and recognising these differences is vital for effective support:

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD): Persistent sadness and loss of interest in daily activities.
  • Persistent Depressive Disorder (Dysthymia): Long-term low mood lasting for years.
  • Bipolar Disorder: Bipolar disorder is a condition where a person goes through cycles of depression and high-energy mania.
  • Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Depression linked to seasonal changes, often in winter.
  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD): Severe mood changes linked to the menstrual cycle.
  • Atypical Depression: Depression with temporary mood lifts and heightened sensitivity to rejection.

Symptoms of Depression

Depression does not look the same for everyone. Each young person may experience it in different ways, but there are common signs that can signal when ordinary sadness has developed into something more serious and in need of professional support.

For adolescents and young adults, depression can show up in ways that parents quickly notice — long hours spent isolated in their bedroom, withdrawing from friends, constant screen time, or even signs of self-harm. These behaviours often disrupt academic progress, strain relationships, and make it harder for them to manage everyday responsibilities. Without timely support, depression can deepen and become more severe over time.

Seeking the right support early gives young people the greatest opportunity to improve, helping them rebuild confidence and restore balance.

Our Healing Approach for

Mind, Body & Soul

At Lions Campus, we take a whole-person approach that supports mind, body, and wellbeing together. We begin with a personal consultation to understand each young person’s experiences, routines, and emotional challenges.

Progress looks different for everyone. Through regular reviews and consistent support, we help young people build confidence, strengthen resilience, and create healthier daily routines over time.

Our approach also encourages young people to reconnect with activities, relationships, and routines that help them feel more balanced and supported in everyday life. By creating a structured and positive environment, we help them gradually rebuild motivation, emotional awareness, and confidence in themselves.

Families are an important part of the journey too. We work closely with parents and carers to provide guidance, encouragement, and consistency, helping young people feel supported both within the programme and at home.
