Understanding Trauma
Trauma happens when a person experiences events that overwhelm their ability to cope, leaving lasting emotional, psychological, and sometimes physical effects. For young people, these events might include abuse, bullying, accidents, family breakdowns, sudden loss, or other distressing experiences.
Trauma can disrupt the nervous system, leaving young people in a heightened state of stress long after the event. Without the right support, this can contribute to challenges such as anxiety, low mood, emotional withdrawal, or unhealthy coping patterns. Trauma may also affect sleep, energy levels, concentration, and overall daily functioning.
Understanding the nature of trauma is the first step toward positive progress. Recognising the signs early allows young people and families to access support that can prevent long-term challenges and build resilience.
